Frequently Asked Questions

Is St. Boniface Hospital the best ER in Winnipeg for heart attacks or cardiac emergencies?
Yes. St. Boniface Hospital is Manitoba's Provincial Cardiac Centre of Excellence and home to the Bergen Cardiac Care Centre. It is the only hospital in Manitoba offering certain specialized cardiac services, including three cardiac angiography rooms, an electrophysiology room, and a pacemaker and cardiac defibrillator room. For cardiac emergencies, always call 911 so paramedics can initiate care en route.
Does St. Boniface Hospital offer French-language emergency services?
Yes. St. Boniface Hospital is provincially designated as a bilingual health care centre and offers full French-language clinical services, including in the Emergency Department. This makes it a preferred destination for Winnipeg's Francophone community.
How many treatment spaces does the St. Boniface ER have?
The Emergency Department has 64 treatment spaces in total. The expanded department — part of a $141 million redevelopment project — includes a central resuscitation room, private exam rooms, a dedicated mental health treatment area, and an on-site diagnostic imaging suite with a CT scanner and X-ray machine.
Can I deliver my baby at St. Boniface Hospital if I arrive at the ER in active labour?
St. Boniface Hospital delivers over 4,200 babies per year and has a full Labour and Delivery department, including high-risk obstetrics and a NICU that cares for approximately 750 premature or ill infants annually. If you arrive in active labour through the Emergency Department, you will be assessed and transferred to the appropriate care area promptly.
Is there parking available if I need to bring someone to the St. Boniface ER?
Yes. The hospital has a multi-level Parkade and three surface lots. The South East lot along Taché Avenue, accessed via Goulet Place, is fully public and available 24 hours a day at standard ticketed parking rates — it is the most convenient option for ER visitors. Free taxi telephones are located at the Emergency entrance.
Does St. Boniface Hospital treat stroke patients in the Emergency Department?
Yes. The St. Boniface Emergency Department is a designated regional referral site for stroke patients. If you suspect someone is having a stroke — sudden face drooping, arm weakness, or speech difficulty — call 911 immediately. Paramedics will determine the most appropriate receiving hospital based on the situation.
