Urgent care centres treat problems that need attention within a day but are not life-threatening: sprains and possible fractures, cuts needing stitches, infections, fevers, rashes. They are usually faster than an emergency department, and it is worth being precise about why. On Alberta Health Services' own feed, using the same measure for both, urgent care runs a median wait of 114 minutes against 211 for emergency departments. That gap is the patients, not the speed: an urgent care centre sees a lower-acuity population and sends anything serious onward.
In a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to an emergency department. Chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding and major trauma all belong in an ER, however long the posted wait.
Three provinces publish urgent care wait times at all. British Columbia publishes through a shared provincial feed, though Fraser Health switched its own centres off on 17 August 2026 and eleven of them have shown no number since. Alberta publishes five Calgary-area centres alongside its emergency departments. Manitoba publishes three Winnipeg centres on a page separate from its emergency departments. Everywhere else, urgent care waits are not published by anyone, so this page cannot show them either.
