About Yorkton Regional Health Centre

The emergency department at Yorkton Regional Health Centre is open 24 hours a day, and at roughly 19,000 visits a year it is the busiest emergency department in east-central Saskatchewan. The hospital is an 86-bed acute care referral centre, the largest inpatient facility in the southeast of the province, and its catchment reaches into western Manitoba. It runs four operating suites covering general surgery, gynecology and full obstetrical services, three birthing rooms with 14 antenatal and postpartum beds, a pediatric inpatient unit for patients 18 and under, an intensive care unit, and on-site dialysis, cancer treatment and diagnostic imaging. Visiting orthopaedic, ENT and vascular surgeons hold clinics here, and neurology and nephrology run as virtual telehealth clinics. The building dates from 1962 and a replacement hospital for Yorkton has been a provincial political question for several years.

Tips Before You Go

• Yorkton is the referral centre for a wide rural catchment, which means the waiting room can fill from an incident 100 km away with no warning and no pattern you could have predicted from the time of day.
• If you are in labour or your child needs admission, Yorkton is the closest site for obstetrics and inpatient pediatrics in the region. Smaller health centres nearby will transfer you here.
• Transit stops running at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, earlier on Saturday, and does not run Sunday. Plan a ride home before you go in, because a long ED visit can easily outlast the last bus.

Getting There

Yorkton Transit serves the health centre. It runs two routes using 12-seat vans, Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no evening service and no Sunday service, so a night-time or Sunday trip to the emergency department means driving, a taxi, or a ride from someone. The hospital is at 270 Bradbrooke Drive.
