Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mills Memorial Hospital still open, or has it been replaced?
The original Mills Memorial Hospital, which served Terrace since 1961, has been replaced by a brand-new facility called Ksyen Regional Hospital, which opened on November 24, 2024. The new hospital is located at the same address — 4720 Haugland Ave — and continues to provide 24/7 emergency care, now in a modern building more than double the size of the former facility.
What does 'Ksyen' mean and why was the hospital renamed?
Ksyen (pronounced approximately 'K-syen') is the Sm'algya̱x word for the Skeena River, meaning 'River of the Mist.' The hospital was gifted this Tsimshian name in recognition of the Indigenous territory on which it stands. Northern Health collaborated with local and regional First Nations through an Indigenous advisory working group to ensure the new facility is culturally safe and welcoming.
What trauma level is Ksyen Regional Hospital's emergency department?
Ksyen Regional Hospital is actively working toward designation as a Level 3 trauma centre, which would be an upgrade from the former Level 4 designation held by Mills Memorial Hospital. A Level 3 designation means the facility can provide immediate assessment, resuscitation, surgery, and intensive care, allowing more patients in northwestern BC to receive high-acuity trauma care locally without transport to a larger centre.
Does Ksyen Regional Hospital offer MRI and advanced imaging?
Yes. The new hospital is equipped with a state-of-the-art CT scanner, a new MRI, and a SPECT-CT machine — all representing the latest imaging technology. The MRI and SPECT-CT are regional services provided for all of northwestern BC, meaning patients no longer need to travel to a larger centre in Prince George or Vancouver for these scans.
Does the hospital serve communities outside of Terrace?
Yes. Ksyen Regional Hospital is the primary healthcare hub for a vast region of northwestern British Columbia, serving communities including Thornhill, the Nass Valley, Haida Gwaii, Stuart Lake, and Dease Lake, in addition to Terrace. It also provides acute mental health services to the entire Northwest Health Service Delivery Area.
Is there mental health support available at Ksyen Regional Hospital?
Yes. The hospital has 20 inpatient beds dedicated to adult psychiatric care, and mental health services are listed among the hospital's core specialties. Additionally, the Seven Sisters — a separate 25-bed, 10,000-square-foot mental health facility — is located on the same grounds and offers long-term rehabilitation and recovery programs for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness.

About ER Wait Times

Emergency departments use triage — patients with more serious conditions are seen first, regardless of arrival time.

Wait times are estimates based on British Columbia health data using historical volumes, current patient counts, and staffing. Actual wait times may vary.
