What to Bring

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Brantford General Hospital's Emergency Department offer mental health crisis services?
Yes. BGH has dedicated Psychiatric Emergency Services within the ED, including emergency mental health assessments. The Emergency Mental Health Resource Hospital (EMRH) team — made up of registered nurses and social workers specializing in mental health — is available to assess patients in crisis and consult with ED staff.
What is the See & Treat area at Brantford General's ED, and do I qualify?
The See & Treat area is a dedicated section of the ED designed for patients whose conditions can be assessed, treated, and resolved within four hours. It is staffed daily from 8:00 a.m. to midnight and handles approximately 50% of all ED patients, including the majority of pediatric patients. Triage staff will direct you to this area if appropriate based on your assessment.
Where should I park if I am going to the Emergency Department at Brantford General?
ED patients may use Lot B (staff and ED patients) or Lot C (ED patients, Dialysis patients, and Maternal-Child program). Take your ticket at entry, pay at a pay station inside the hospital (including one inside the ED) before returning to your car, and note that exit gates accept credit card only.
Which entrance should I use at Brantford General Hospital after hours?
The Emergency Department Walk-in Entrance off Terrace Hill Street is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is the correct entrance to use for emergency visits at any time. The A-Wing, D-Wing, and E-Wing entrances are open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. only.
Is Brantford General Hospital a teaching hospital?
Yes. BCHS, including Brantford General Hospital, is an affiliated teaching site of McMaster University's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. The system has also achieved a 99.5% compliance rate with Accreditation Canada national and global standards, and has ranked among the top four hospitals in Canada for lowest in-hospital death rates for three consecutive years.
Does Brantford General Hospital's ED treat children?
Yes. The ED treats pediatric patients, with the majority of children directed to the See & Treat area for faster, more focused care. BGH also has a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic (CAPC) on site for children and teens aged 5–17 with mental health concerns, though that clinic operates separately from the ED.
